^That's kind of yuck.

My Mum's brother is an idiot. Loud-mouthed and even worse when drunk which is often.

I think it would be easier to list the living relatives I actually like or at least haven't had much chance to form an opinion about. rolleyes

Aye, I couldn't agree more. Just like someone saying that it would be easier to list the teachers who have made a positive impact rather than a negative one... a much shorter list, I'm sure. wink

Re: Any Family Members/Relatives you can't stand?

Well, I can't say there are any of my relatives that I really can't stand. This is partly because I don't see most of them very often and partly because mum has probably borne the brunt of any family disagreements and smoothed them over. She only tells me years later and then I wish I'd known sooner.

I get that a lot why can't they just say something. I'm 40 and am still finding out stuff that I didn't know about when I was a kid.  Many things make so much more sense now that I know more about what had happened but there is still much more.

Yes, I think mum wanted to protect me a lot because she and dad thought I was "emotionally fragile". In some ways, I am better in a crisis or with shocking information than with little everyday problems. I have misjudged some people not knowing the true circumstances and now want to know as much as possible before forming an opinion.

There are a few relatives I feel awkward around because they tend to give more advice than I can handle but the main issue I have is just not seeing most of them often enough because they don't live close.

I got the over protective bit real bad I was the youngest by ten years and was always the baby of the family.  Now 41 and still hearing new things about when I was growing up eh

Re: Any Family Members/Relatives you can't stand?

Funny thing is, I was the eldest of 7 kids but my parents decided early on that I was too highly strung to cope with much bad news. Whether or not that was right, I don't know.

I don't know if that's what they thought of me but I was almost never given bad news.  When you think about it that's really bad as when I got older I got bad news and didn't know how to deal with it

Re: Any Family Members/Relatives you can't stand?

I've never been good under stress but I'm starting to learn in the last couple years.  My brother is HIV and my mother had breast cancer(lump).  When I got the news I acted like they were telling me a story and that I was dreaming.  I didn't cry in front of them and I try to be very strong for them. Years later, I try not to talk about it and only a few people know. As for my son, I knew something was wrong with him.  So I definitely had to be strong for him.

Re: Any Family Members/Relatives you can't stand?

It's really true if you are shielded from all bad news as a child that it's harder to cope with it when you are older. Maybe the best thing is to get kids used to small bits of bad news (but then again, sometimes really bad things happen and you can't completely protect them).
